Paranda Fort

Paranda Fort is located in Paranda town in Osmanabad district. It is Bhuikot fort in the middle of the town. Parinda (Paranda) was an important pargana during the Chalukya period of Kalyani. It was built by Mahmud Gawan during the Bahmani rule.

History

There is no concrete evidence as to when the fort was built but it is believed that Mahmud Gawan, the vizier of the Bahamani Sultans, built the fort around the late 15th century AD. In 1599, the Mughal army succeeded in defeating Nizam Shah of Ahmed Nagar. Although the Mughals had won, Nizam Shahi’s chieftains decided to rule the kingdom in the name of the younger Murtuja Nizam Shah and chose Paranda fort, about 80 miles southeast of Ahmed Nagar, as their new capital.[2] Paranda remained the capital for some time. From 1629 to 1632, the fort was under the control of Shahaji Maharaj, then again it passed to the Mughals and finally to the Nizam of Hyderabad until the independence of India.

Parimanda (Paranda) was an important pargana during the Chalukya period of Kalyani. The fort there is 35 meters long and the same width. It was built by Mahmud Gawan, Prime Minister of Muhammadshah Bahamani during the Bahamani rule in AD. Around 1600 AD, this fort was captured by the Mughals. After that in 1629, Shahaji Raja captured it and it was under his control for two years. A.D. In 1632 he went to Adilsha of Bijapur. His general named Murar took the famous Mulukhamaidan cannon from this fort to Bijapur in 1632.

Features

This fort is famous for its military architecture and military-engineering features. The famous ‘Mulukh Maidan Cannon’ was housed in this fort. A Sardar named Murar of Adil Shah of Bijapur took this cannon to Bijapur. Along with this, there is also a cannon called Ajda Paikar in the fort. Paranda fort has ancient Mahadev temple and Narsih temple as well as a mosque. The five-feet tall and six-armed idol of Ganesha in a dancing posture in the Paranda fort is unique. There are idols of Adisesha Tirthankara nearby which are in ruins today. The fort has a beautiful octagonal shaped well. [3].This is the Bhuikot fort and is in the middle of the city.
