Kandahar Fort

Kandahar Fort is a Bhuikot fort located in the village of Kandahar taluka in Nanded district of Maharashtra.

History

The construction of this fort was started by Rashtrakuta King Krishna III. Later, various kings who conquered this fort added to the construction of this fort. A.D. After Tughlaq conquered Warangal in 1403, Kandahar came under his rule. Tughlaq appointed Nasrat Sultan as the administrator here. But Nasrat Sultana made an unsuccessful uprising here. Its name is mentioned in the inscription on the left side of Machili Darwaja in this fort. This inscription is dated Hijri 744 i.e. AD. It is from the year 1336. Around the time of Ibrahim Adilshah AD. There is an inscription dated around 1590 on the Shahi Buru while on the Muhammadi Masjid in the fort itself there is an inscription of Ibrahim Adil Shah in AD. There is an article from the year 1605. Dhan Buruj, Varang Darwaza and adjacent buildings of Kandahar Fort were built by Ibrahim Adil Shah. There is a cannon named Ambari on the Dhanburuz. The famous steward Malik Ambar also completed and built many buildings in this fort. It also has an inscription on a Muhammadan mosque. During the reign of Murtaza Nizam Polad Khan and Ghori Khan repaired the embankment walls and built bastions. A beautiful garden was created in the fort by Mirza Hamiduddin Khan on the orders of Aurangzeb. In the article on Shah Buruza, this garden is mentioned as Bagh-e-Rashke Kashmir.

This fort is spread over 15 acres and is surrounded by a moat. This fort was the capital of Rashtrakul dynasty. The fort has a watch tower and several guns are still in good condition.

The earlier name of Kandahar is Panchalpuri and legend has it that the Pandavas got married to Draupadi at this place.

Kandahar Fort can be reached by ST corporation buses and private vehicles. It is 50 km from Nanded.
